The Accelerated School on KABC-TV
As a former public school teacher, Johnathan Williams is well aware of how the Los Angeles Unified School District functions. So, he and a fellow teacher took matters into their own hands by raising funds from corporations and donations to create a new business model for education which became The Accelerated School. Their philosophy is to treat each student as gifted, with grades K-12 located on one campus in South Central L.A. With the addition of CEO Joaquin Hernandez, the school has changed the curriculum to emphasize longer classes, more sports, arts and music classes as well as preparing students for college.

Mission
From the earliest days, TAS founders Kevin Sved and Johnathan Williams envisioned a learning community where the social, emotional and cognitive growth of inner city children would be developed and supported by the entire community. Their vision, “from cradle to college”, would provide students with an unparalleled opportunity to experience a seamless intensive learning environment. Housed on the same campus, students would benefit from articulation from grade-to-grade in the same environment, with the same teaching and administrative staff, thereby providing TAS teachers with invaluable insight into and knowledge of student performance and history.

TAS administrative structure, academic program, learning environment and teaching methods are based on the Accelerated Schools Model developed by Dr. Henry Levin at Stanford University. Accelerated schools incorporate the efforts of parents and schools together, co-leading governance and decision making functions to create a curriculum and atmosphere in which accelerated learning is fostered.

TAS is committed to the premise that every child should be treated as gifted, that students achieve when supported in a learning environment with high expectations. Given this belief, TAS accepts incoming students by lottery, regardless of their academic achievement elsewhere and all parents must agree to actively participate in their child’s education.

Our goal is to graduate students who are prepared to succeed at the university of their choice, who will enter the workforce as informed and productive employees, entrepreneurs and community leaders; and who will act as socially aware and responsible citizens.
