As a former public school teacher, Johnathan Williams is well aware of how the Los Angeles Unified School District functions. So he and a fellow teacher took matters into their own hands by raising funds from corporations and donations to create a new business model for education which became The Accelerated School. Their philosophy is to treat each student as gifted, with grades K-12 located on one campus in South Central L.A. With the addition of CEO Joaquin Hernandez, the school has changed the curriculum to emphasize longer classes, more sports, arts and music classes as well as preparing students for college.

Mission
The Accelerated Schools were founded on the belief that every child be treated as gifted, with an emphasis on high expectations for student achievement, a supportive learning environment, and extensive parent involvement. And, at The Accelerated Schools, all incoming students are accepted by lottery, regardless of academic achievement elsewhere.

Student success at The Accelerated Schools is distinguished by a culture focused on higher education. That emphasis on achievement also integrates continuous improvement of teaching methods and professional development that, ultimately helps ensure students gain the knowledge and skills needed to succeed at the college or university of their choice.

Our goal is to graduate students who are well prepared for the challenges that lie ahead. And, ultimately, each will enter the workforce—not only as informed, responsible and productive employees, entrepreneurs and community leaders—but also as socially aware and responsible citizens.

Today, The Accelerated Schools continue to create a place for education that allows more children to learn and succeed, while continuing to transform the South Central Los Angeles community.
